What is Subbuteo / Table Football?

Subbuteo is a table top game simulating association football or soccer where players use their index finger to flick weighted plastic player figurines at a miniature sized football with the aim of scoring more goals than their opponent.

The game, also referred to as table football or table soccer, is often described as a combination of football, chess and snooker but done at speed and requires skill, concentration and a lot of determination. Most importantly though, its lots of fun and can be played by all ages and skill levels.

The game was invented by British ornithologist Peter Adolph in 1947. The name Subbuteo is derived from the neo-Latin scientific name Falco Subbuteo which is a bird of prey commonly known as the Eurasian hobby.

The Illawarra Table Football Club

Competitively, Subbuteo / table football is played in over 40 registered countries who's associations are administered worldwide under the Federation of International Sports Table Football (FISTF). Each country holds its own FISTF sanctioned tournaments throughout year where players can accumulate World ranking points both individually and for team events. A World Cup event is also held every year.

In Australia there are currently 16 clubs set up around the country in the Australian Table Football Association (ATFA). The biggest national event of the year is the FISTF sanctioned Australian Grand Prix tournament which is usually held in January or February.

There is also an alternative World Amateur Subbuteo Players Association (WASPA) where local clubs can setup their own smaller tournaments and gain WASPA World ranking points.
